Advanced Education - 2024 Integrating Communication, Assessment & Tactics (ICAT)
|
ICAT is a training program that provides first responding police officers with the tools, skills, and options they need to successfully and safely defuse a range of critical incidents. Developed by PERF with input from hundreds of police professionals from across the United States, ICAT takes the essential building blocks of critical thinking, crisis intervention, communications, and tactics, and puts them together in an integrated approach to training.
ICAT is designed especially for situations involving persons who are unarmed or are armed with weapons other than firearms, and who may be experiencing a mental health or other crisis. The training program is anchored by the Critical Decision-Making Model that helps officers assess situations, make safe and effective decisions, and document and learn from their actions. ICAT incorporates different skill sets into a unified training approach that emphasizes scenario-based exercises, as well as lecture and case study opportunities

The Advanced Education Unit will be offering an 8-hour course on Fair and Impartial Policing. Unlike traditional “racial profiling” training, FIP applies decades of research on human bias to the critical decisions law enforcement officers make every day. It is a course about how your mind works. There is no finger-pointing or blame; instead, we discuss how implicit biases impact well-intentioned individuals outside their conscious awareness. We discuss the negative consequences of letting your “hidden biases” impact your perceptions and behavior and, most importantly, we will teach you the skills that you can implement to reduce and manage your biases. Those skills will not keep you from doing your most important job of crime control; instead, the skills will enhance your ability to engage in that work more safely and effectively. They will also enhance your legitimacy with the diverse communities that you serve.

This class will discuss how that ‘Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a basic life-saving skill taught to the layperson just as the Heimlich maneuver and CPR are basic life-saving skills. The student will understand the suicide rates of law enforcement personnel versus that of the average population. The students will review and understand some common myths surrounding the topic suicide and be taught the actual facts regarding those same issues. The class covers risk factors and be able to identify situation cues, behavioral cues and the importance of sobriety in suicide prevention. The student will understand some of the basic tips for asking the suicide question learn some of the basic skills used in the persuade phase of suicide intervention. Finally, the student will understand the best methods of referrals for a suicidal subject and be given local resources that are best equipped to handle and counsel suicidal subjects.

AEU - Police Mountain Bike Skill Builder

These training sessions are for any graduate of the APD basic Police Mountain-Bike School who wants to expand and develop their riding skills on dirt. This beginner-level course is designed for bicycle riders who want a deeper dive into trail riding beyond what was learned in the 40-hour Police Mountain Bike School.
The instructors for these trainings consist of officers who are skilled bicycle instructors and who have decades of trail-riding, racing, and instruction experience.
This training will also assist in building the skills needed to complete the Wilderness Patrol School.
Participants will be taught proper techniques for ascending/descending, cornering, and otherwise negotiating parkland trails and their associated obstacles. The training will culminate with an instructor-led group ride on beginner-level trails for several miles.

Students will understand that maintaining distance and utilizing other force options remains a strategy for dealing with combative or resistant subjects and nothing in this lesson plan is designed to limit those options. LSUFA -- Concealed Carry for Law Enforcement
|
The underlying theme of this course is that the reason an officer carries a concealed handgun should dictate a variety of important considerations including choice of weapon, holster, dress, personal habits and other enforcement tools. One of those critical choices include choosing a weapon and holster combination which allows the officer rapid and accurate deployment of the handgun, stopping the threat in the most efficient manner. These considerations are illustrated on the range with officers developing their concealed carry skills by engaging threats in a variety of real world drills including live fire force on contact drills. As a result, our officers while in plain clothes and when appropriate, will be able to deliver quick, accurate and effective stopping power to a target zone, thus stopping a deadly force threat.

LSUFA -- Counter Assault Strike Team (CAST) Training

The course is open to Officers, Corporals and Sergeants, however, CAST is a patrol based program. At this time only those assigned to patrol shifts, or soon to be, will be accepted for this course. The course will consist of training in various tactics and techniques that will further enhance officers' capabilities in responding to active attack and, or mass homicide incidents. Topics will include initiative based CQB, small unit tactics, combat medicine, rural operations, firearms, command and control, pre planned deployments and more. In order to be accepted to this course officers must be off probation, and already be APD AR handler certified. The CAST Basic course is a prerequisite for those interested in becoming members of the CAST program, however, officers do not have to have intentions of joining the program to sign up and participate in this CAST course. No comp or overtime will be earned during the course.

The student will review tactics and techniques associated with the less lethal shotgun and reform an understanding of the capabilities of the CTS model 2581 Super Sock Bean Bag round. The TCOLE Firearms Instructor Course is a 40 hour course that will provide instruction in the following areas TCOLE rules and regulations relating to firearms instructors, range safety, course of fire development, diagnosing shooting problems, and how to run a safe range. Students will be required to create a course of fire, operate a safe range from the shooting line, and effectively teach a block of instruction to fellow shooters. Students will be required to successfully shoot the TCOLE Firearms Instructor course of fire before being admitted to the course. Successful completion of this course will certify the student as a TCOLE Firearms Instructor and will allow them to serve as an APD Adjunct Firearms Instructor. Students must hold a Basic TCOLE Instructor certificate in order to attend this course.

LSUFA -- First Responder Trauma Care
|
First Responder Trauma Care is a classroom based course which incorporates hands on exercises to provide students with training on how to render basic medical care for traumatic injuries before EMS or Fire arrive on scene. First priority will be given to personnel on patrol who have not received this training in the past. That is, officers or supervisors who have rotated back to patrol and have not attended a trauma care class. The course will cover, Basic Trauma Plan, Phases of Care, BATH Assessment, Tourniquets, Chest Seals, Wound Packing and Bandaging. At the conclusion of this course successful attendees will be eligible to be issued a CAT Tourniquet, tourniquet holder, and a Basic Trauma IFAK. The equipment will be issued from the basement PCO.

LSUFA -- Handgun Red Dot Transition
|
The Handgun Red Dot Transition Course is required prior to carrying a red dot equipped handgun on duty. The course covers handgun applications specific to using a red dot including maintenance, effects of red dots on handgun shooting fundamentals, overcoming red dot related failures, and target acquisition in mixed lighting conditions.
Students must bring all personal-owned equipment for the course or have the equipment prepared in advanced at the range. Personally-owned red dots must be mounted and zeroed prior to class. The range will be available before the class to assist.
Officers who are being issued department-owned M&Ps with red dots will get them the morning of the class along with issued holsters and weapon lights. They do not need to come out to the range before the class.

The Learned Skills Unit is conducting the Pepperball FTC Launcher Certification course which will introduce, train, and certify officers in the use and application of the authorized Pepperball System. The certification course will include a Powerpoint lecture identifying the Pepperball FTC Launcher, how and when to deploy the launcher, discussion points on use of force as it pertains to LOW KINETIC ENERGY projectiles, APD policy and air refill stations. Officers attending the course will perform the exposure portion of the course which consist of receiving a direct impact projectile and PAVA exposure. At the conclusion of the Pepperball Certification Course, officers will have to perform a qualification course of fire, a written test and must qualify annually to maintain the Pepperball Certification.

This course is not just about the fundamentals of pistol shooting and will focus heavily on target, eye focus and body mechanics that are essential for proper target transitions. Students will develop their ability to transition their visual focus and trigger control based on the difficulty of the target they are presented with. Students will demonstrate proficiency in the use the vehicle as cover, be able to fight from inside and around all sides of the vehicle, and win in an ambush during vehicle operations. Vehicle Ambush Tactics is a live-fire and scenario-based force-on-force course that provides students with a tactical response to an officer ambush inside and around vehicles. The course covers preparing for a vehicle ambush, the ballistic effects of bullets through vehicles, shooting around vehicles, exiting vehicles while under fire, and engaging from inside of vehicles. Live-fire will reinforce tactics and handgun marksmanship in the morning, and force-on-force Simunitions scenarios will apply tactics and marksmanship in the afternoon.

Patrol K9 - K9 Decoy School
|
This class is an excellent opportunity for officers to become more familiar with how Austin Police Department Patrol Dogs operate.
Upon completion of this course, officers will be able to assist the APD K9 Unit by acting as decoys for future training.
During the two day course, students will have the opportunity to interact with our patrol dogs, learn how to properly decoy with the full bite suit, bite sleeve, and decoy when the dog is in muzzle. Scenario training will include how APD K9’s are best utilized during building searches, high risk car stops, area searches, and also firearms training.
We can only accommodate 20 students, so space will be limited! It is highly recommended that any potential future Patrol K9 Officer applicants attend this course.
Be advised, this is a physically demanding class and all attendees will be expected to participate in all of the exercises and scenarios. These exercises and scenarios will involve each student interacting with our K9s while in the full bite suite and bite sleeve.

SWAT - 2022-2023 Building Search for Patrol
|
The use of proper tactics in conducting a building search will maximize the officers’ advantage in any non-compliant encounter, allow officers to maximize their information processing to ensure that compliant subjects are dealt with appropriately, and does not significantly slow the clearing process when compared to less comprehensive clearing techniques. These tactics are intended to be used for alarm and property crime calls, and so prioritize officer and subject safety over speed. However, the consistent use of these tactics will also ingrain proper habits, so that if and when the day comes when an emergency entry must be made to save innocent lives, officers will be better prepared to do so.
This class will use both 2D targets and live role players. Simunitions will be used— sim pistols and rifle bolts will be provided.

SWAT - SWAT School
|
The Austin Police Department SWAT Team will host the 2022 Basic SWAT school starting on November 2nd through November 9th. ******************************************
The Basic SWAT School is a very demanding and thorough 80 hour 8 day tactics based school. Students will gain a variety of tactical skills and knowledge that can be applied in any police assignment. Future desire to apply to the SWAT team is not required to attend this training. All applicants must sign up using the Acadis System and will receive a slot in the order that the applications are received.

Once the class is full we will maintain a waiting list for 15 additional students. For work schedule purposes 40 hours of productive time will be worked between Wednesday, November 2nd and Saturday November 5th. The remaining 40 hours of productive time will be worked between Sunday the 6th and Wednesday the 9th. ***********************************************
All attendees must adjust their regular duty hours with their supervisors, no overtime or compensatory time will be earned during the course. Any officer in top physical condition with at least TWO years of continuous service with APD is eligible to apply for the school. All applicants should be capable of running 5 miles at a 8 minute 30 sec pace followed by calisthenics. Before an APD officer can attend the school the officer must have the approval of the APD Wellness Office. Additional information on obtaining approval by the APD Wellness Office will be sent out after registration.

A pre assessment SWAT PT test will be administered on October 19th for everyone that is registered for the training and on the wait list. *****************************************
Officers must pass the PT Assessment to reserve their spot on the roster/waitlist. If a registered student fails to successfully complete the PT assessment students from the wait list who have successfully completed the PT assessment will be moved into a registered slot. Once the training begins each student must successfully pass elements of the training to remain in this school, but no one from the wait list will be put into the school once the training begins. All officers successfully completing the school will receive 80 hours of TCOLE credit and a Basic SWAT School certificate and will be eligible to participate in future SWAT training as well as apply for future positions on the SWAT team. A SWAT school information packet including schedules and equipment list will be sent to the students after the successful completion of the SWAT PT assessment. Successful completion of the APD Basic SWAT School is a prerequisite for any officer wanting to apply for a position on the APD SWAT full time and, or reserve team.
